Recently much fuss has been made over the arrival of Star Trek: The Next Generation to Netflix Instant. But if TNG isn’t quite up your alley or you just can’t get enough hard sci-fi, you might want to check out the often overlooked but excellent Farscape. This cult classic Australian import does a fine job following the classic genre formula: presenting a core group of strong, disparate characters with fantastical problems, unexpected twists, and season-long intrigues.
Technically, Farscape holds up well. The show makes good use of both masterful puppetry and makeup effects along with subtle CG to create its imaginary worlds and inhabitants. Farscape also has some of the cleverest writing in televised science fiction. The show definitely exists in a post-Hitchhiker’s Guide world, hopping over obstacles like language barriers with innovation and whimsy.
When you’re finished with the series, don’t forget to watch the Peacekeeper Wars movie, also streaming now.
